2023 Snow Pack is Off to Great Start

Winter sports are in full stride as back to back to back storms hit Lake Tahoe and the Sierras. After last year's major Christmas snowstorm--the largest snowfall on record, the basin got little moisture for the remaining year. This year, however, optimism is high with multiple winter storms already landing with more on the way. Last week, the "bomb cyclone" Pacific Ocean river storm dropped record breaking rain in San Francisco, before heading over Tahoe and leaving much needed snowpack. In 2022, the lake water levels had receded below the natural rim, and made launching a boat difficult as Sand Harbor closed its boat ramps early in the season, and IVGID limited boats to under 22' with such low levels. If the current conditions continue, Lake Tahoe will continue to muster hefty water totals with direct lake capture, and continued run-in with melting mountain snowpack. Skiiing is likely to be the best on record with a number of fresh powder days alreaded notched and continued storms on the horizon. With very limited rainfall in the last three years, Tahoe was due for a big winter.
